Xenoblade Chronicles

  1. WARNING! Before starting this game do everything you need to do for the next few days, or weeks for that matter. This game can and will consume you and can NOT be completed in one day, it’s simply impossible, trust me I’ve tried. However, even though it may take up all of your time, it is something that just must be experienced.

Xenoblade Chronicles is a game produced by Monolith Soft in June 10, 2010 for the Nintendo Wii, and even got a spot in the top 10 Wii games of all time. Despite this, it almost never came to North America in the first place. In fact, the Voice Actors for the game are not American, they are all from the UK which, in my opinion is alright since it gives each character a different accent to show the characters were from different cultures, or places. Something negative, however, is that this game has a reputation for being hard to find, as well as being pricey. Specifically, it is one of the rarest Wii games of all time and can be priced from $50-$80.

After starting the game we are greeted with a cool cut scene where we learn that the game takes place on the corpses of two titans that fought eons ago, the story begins on the Bionis however. Then, we are suddenly thrust into battle, where we meet the hero Dunban fighting alongside the Defense force, as well as his two friends, Dickson and Mumkhar, against the Mechon, a race of machine like creatures from the Mechonis, that cannot be hurt using conventional means. Luckily, Dunban has the legendary Monado, a weapon said to have been wielded by the Bionis itself. It also has the ability to kill Mechon and enchant other weapons to be able to attack Mechon. Long story short, Mumkhar decides to try and backstab everyone and run away, it doesn’t work and he dies. Meanwhile, Dunban, after stopping the advance of the Mechon, loses the use of his right arm due to using the Monado for too long.

  2. A year later we find ourselves in Colony 9, one of the last two remaining Hom colonies (Homs are basically humans) also, some Nopon live in the Colony too (Nopon are another sentient race on the Bionis), this is where we meet the actual main character named Shulk, who is really good with machines, we also meet his friend in the Defense Force, Reyn, and his childhood friend Fiora. Reyn saves Shulk from one of the many creatures of the Bionis called a Krabble, all the while giving a tutorial. They head back to the colony and go their separate ways, Shulk to the lab, and Reyn to train or whatever, when Shulk returns he begins researching the Monado which is something he does every day. When Dickson suddenly returns, presumably for materials, and tells Shulk that he’s been spending too much time in the lab and should go outside.

Next, we cut to a scene in Dunban’s house, where he’s been bedridden for a full year so his little sister Fiora brings him food every day, they talk for a bit about how Dunban should never pick up the Monado again, Fiora was worried about him, but, Dunban assures her that he only means he is prepared for if the time arises. Fiora then goes off to deliver food to Shulk, even though he has no sense of taste. She finds Shulk in Outlook part and they talk through a heartwarming and somewhat romantic moment that will come back to haunt you later. Then both Shulk and Fiora go back to the lab where they see Reyn about to pick up the Monado, when he does he can’t really control his swings, destroys a bunch of equipment, and hits Fiora. Reyn gets a scolding from Shulk because Reyn destroyed his equipment, but Fiora gets up unharmed and starts scolding Shulk for not being worried about her. Shulk then explains that the Monado can’t hurt people. Later on after more arguing Reyn asks Shulk if he can come with him to get ether cylinders in Tephra Cave, Shulk agrees, when they get to Tephra Cave, Fiora was waiting for him and she decides to come along too. The group goes through the cave and end up at the ether cylinder storage, when suddenly strange creatures machine like creatures attack, however they are not Mechon.

  3. Shulk theorizes that the creatures responded to something, then the Mechon suddenly appear, the Colony wasn’t prepared for the attack there were many casualties. Shulk decides to go after the Monado to attempt to stop Mechon. But, they are stopped at every turn, when they get to the lab, the entrance caves in. Shulk tells Fiora to get the Mobile Artillery while they hold off the Mechon. Fiora unwillingly goes. Then Reyn is almost eaten, which is one of the ways Mechon kill, when Dunban suddenly appears with the Monado and saves them both. Shulk, Reyn, and Dunban go after Fiora. However, Dunban collapses due to the Monado, while Mechon advance on them and Shulk decides to pick up the Monado, and he uses it without any repercussions, unlike Dunban, he even gains the ability to have little glimpse of what the future will be if he doesn’t do anything, which he calls visions. They advance but a giant Mechon that has a face appears, no Mechon has ever had a face before. The party fights the Mechon but, it wasn’t hurt by the Monado. All hope seemed lost when Fiora in the mobile artillery appears, Shulk has a vision and it shows Fiora being killed but, Shulk is paralyzed on the ground and all he can do is yell, but she can’t hear him. Fiora fights, seemingly winning when she shoots an ether cannon right in the Mechon’s face. However, it only burned the face a little, and Fiora is slammed to the ground. The Mechon sinks its claws into her and she dies. Shulk, fueled by rage gets up and tries to fight once more, but it was no use, he couldn’t do anything. The Mechon, with their work done, retreated. After the battle Shulk and Reyn decide to go off in search for revenge, and the game truly begins. Unfortunately, anything past this is considered massive spoilers.

The gameplay, mostly consists of an open world exploration style game and it is in the third person view. However, the fighting consists of using your auto attack that goes off on timer, and strategically using arts, because after you use an art you have to wait before using that art again. The music in this game really good, to the point where it will get stuck in your head and you won’t mind at all. Lastly, the visuals can make the game look beautiful, and it ties in with the music very well. In fact, I’d go as far as to say this one of the most beautiful games I’ve played, especially in certain areas like Satorl Marsh.

Overall, this game is amazing. However it mainly is based around its story. Also, this game is not worth it if you don’t have the time as it is very lengthy and is better played in long bursts. But, if you really love deep stories, relationships between characters, and adventure. Then, this game is perfect for you.
