The Hobbit Book Review

  1. The Hobbit: A Most Intriguing Tale
A good book that really captures the interest of all types of readers is hard to find. The Hobbit is a fantasy book that was written by J.R.R. Tolkien over fifty years ago, and it definitely is a good read for any type of reader. This story traps readers in awe and wonder as they experience a lot of action and suspense through a mere hobbit’s perspective. (A hobbit is a small creature created by Tolkien that is prone to avoid anything unknown or adventurous. They have very hairy feet and a great appetite.) I myself had a very hard time putting the book down as I got caught up in the awe-inspiring tale of Bilbo the hobbit.
The tale begins with a normal life for Bilbo in Hobbiton, if you call multiple, multiple meals a day and living in a comfortable hole “normal.” And then, all of a sudden, Bilbo’s life is quite disturbed by the arrival of thirteen dwarves and a wizard, Gandalf. They want Bilbo to join them on their quest to overthrow a dragon who took what was rightfully the dwarves’, including their mountain home and their overwhelming amount of gold. Throughout the book, readers find themselves immersed as Bilbo and company continuously encounter trolls, elves, Wargs (evil wolves), goblins, men, and the dragon himself, Smaug.
The Hobbit is very, very descriptive, so it’s easy to imagine all the action and even the characters’ feelings and emotions. Tolkien develops his characters quite well through strong language and superior skill. The story is brought completely full circle, from Hobbiton as the setting in the beginning, to Hobbiton as the ending setting.
As much as many people love The Hobbit, myself included, there are people who would put it down as soon as they see the writing style of Tolkien in this novel. It certainly may be an older writing style, but the amount of detail sure makes up for that! Also, there is very little action in the very beginning (you have to keep reading to find the best parts!).
Overall, The Hobbit is a wonderful masterpiece written for young-adult to adult audiences by a superior writer, J.R.R. Tolkien. I most definitely recommend this book to anyone ready for a challenging, awe-gripping adventure of a lifetime!
