  1. The Maze Runner Review

Did you know that Dylan O’Brien almost didn’t get the part for Thomas because of his hair? Wes Ball the director of the movie thought that his hair was too “MTV” and later while he was talking to 20th Century Fox they recommended Dylan from his part in The Internship. That’s when Wes realized that he has seen him before and started going through all the audition tapes and found his. After that he met up with Dylan and realized that when he doesn’t gel his hair, it looks normal. They started filming The Maze Runner on May 13th, 2013 and finished on July 12th, 2013. They filmed in Baton Ridge, Louisiana. The film was originally set to be released on February 14th, 2014 but the film wasn’t completed until June 2014.

In the movie the main character Thomas, portrayed by Dylan O’Brien, wakes up in a metal box on his way up to an unknown place called the glade, not remembering anything but his name. Later when the box stops he finds himself surrounded by a group of boys, he is greeted by Newt (Thomas Broodie-Sangster) the second in command. Leading all the boys trying to figure out how to escape this unsolvable maze is Alby (Aml Ameen) the oldest glader and the leader of the group. Everything starts going so well at the glade. Thomas even makes a friend, Chuck (Blake Cooper) the youngest glader, and gets trained to be a runner by the keeper of the runners, the ever so sassy Minho (Ki Hong Lee). And suddenly everything randomly starts going wrong; Ben (Chris Sheffield) breaks a rule after getting stung by a griever out in the maze and losing his mind. The next day the first ever girl named Teresa (Kayla Scodelario) who already seems to know Thomas shows up in the box with a note saying that everything will change. Everything does change, the maze doors stop closing at night and the grievers, deadly creatures living in the maze (designed by Ken Barthelmy) start coming into the glade to attack at night. Thomas convinces the boys to hurry and find a code that leads them out of the maze. Gally (Will Poulter) the glades enforcer, keeper of the builders, and the “muscular bully” tries to tell everyone not to trust Thomas. At the end, all the last minute action happens which will leave your mind blown. The amazing Ava Paige (Patricia Clarkson) has everything planned for the next book/movie in the trilogy coming September 18th, 2015.

  2. There are many little differences between the book and the movie, many of which include spoilers. Some non-spoiling differences include the fact that Alby was nicer to Thomas in the movie. In the book Alby is strict and vicious. In addition the creator was called WICKED and there were plaques on the maze walls which said “World In Catastrophe Kill Zone Experiment Department” in the book. The creators are called WCKD in the movie with no plaques but the name was engraved on the walls. There are lots of little differences but also a lot of big differences too. In the book, when Teresa comes up the box she is in a coma for most of the time, in the movie she wakes up shortly after arriving. Also in the book Thomas and Teresa can communicate telepathically and in the movie they don’t, but there would necessarily be a professional way to film people talking telepathically for half the movie so some of the differences are reasonable. Another big difference is that after the doors stop closing at night the grievers come charging in ready to kill everyone in the movie whereas in the book after the doors stop closing the grievers come but only take one boy a night. An important difference is that in the book when you get stung by a griever there are always serums - to cure the sting- at hand and in the movie, the gladers only get two bottles of serum found in Teresa’s pocket when she comes up. Adding on to that difference because of the lack of medicine in the movie, not as many gladers risk dying from a griever sting, so Gally never went through the changing which happens after you get stung as a side effect where you remember a certain part of your past. He does not remember Thomas. In the book, before Thomas comes to the glade Gally gets stung by a griever and goes through the changing and sees Thomas in his memories. Although there are differences Wes Balls was really successful with sticking with the book.

The Maze Runner is nothing like what the rumors say about it being a copy of Divergent or The Hunger Games. James Dashner, the author of the book, actually finished writing The Maze Runner before both those other books were even published. Eleven character cards were released in July 2013. Starting in January 2014 Wes Ball released one image from the movie each week, leading up to the trailer release on March 17th, 2014. On July 29th the second trailer was released exclusively on Yahoo movies. The movie was released on September 19, 2014 by 20th Century Fox. On the opening day The Maze Runner earned 11.25 million dollars. During the opening weekend the movie earned 32.5 million dollars, and since its release it earned 337.7 million worldwide! All that money from a 34 million dollar budget. The DVD was released on December 16, 2014.

The Maze Runner a huge success was based off of The Lord of the Flies in a young adult science fiction, post-apocalyptic setting. In a rigidly structured dystopian future, where one plucky teenager dares to think for himself, WCKD the initials found on the walls of the glade and all the supplies that are sent up the box every week, have sent messages saying “WICKED IS GOOD” who knows what their motives are and apparently they are the ones that built the maze and put everyone in it. After the gladers have escaped the maze, who knows what could be next? Follow what happens next in the upcoming sequel The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials where new challenges are to be faced.
