  1. “As God is my witness, as God is my witness they're not going to lick me. I'm going to live through this and when it's all over, I'll never be hungry again. No, nor any of my folk. If I have to lie, steal, cheat or kill. As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again,” said Scarlett O’Hara, when she returned back to her home, Tara. The film Gone With The Wind is a classic historical love story with a bit of tragedy. The film has great actors and actresses, a heartfelt storyline, and based on a book written by Margaret Mitchell to back it up. Truly it is a classic that should be passed down through generations to get the feel of great movies.

True the whole story of “Gone With The Wind” is fantastic, it’s the actors, actresses, and people who worked on the film that brought it to life. With Clark Gable as Rhett Butler and Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O’Hara the two definitely bring the characters from the book to life. Clark Gable also stared in Red Dust in 1932 and The Misfits in 1961 which was his last appearance. Vivien Leigh stared in theater in William Shakespeare playwrights. Leigh stared as Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and as Juliet in Romeo and Juliet. She was also named the 16th greatest female movie star of all time. Leslie Howard plays as Ashley Wilkes and Olivia de Havilland who stars as Melanie Hamilton. Howard was also a director and producer as well as an actor. Havilland stars in another version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream as Hermia and Lady Marian Fitzwaler in The Adventures of Robin Hood. Supporting actors and actresses are Thomas Mitchell as Gerald O’Hara, Barbara O’Neil as Ellen O’Hara, Evelyn Keyes as Suellen O’Hara, Ann Ruthford as Carreen O’Hara, and Hattie McDaniel as Mammy. McDaniel was the first African American to win an Academy Award. The award was for best supporting actress. The movie had three directors who were Victor Fleming, George Cukor, and Sam Wood. Fleming has also directed the film The Wizard of Oz in 1939, Cukor has also directed The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in 1938, and Wood has directed For Whom the Bell Tolls in 1943. The producer of the film was David O’Selznick who worked on King Kong in 1933. The beautiful clothing was designed by Walter Plunkett. The beautifully set was designed by William Cameron Menziez. Sidney Howard was the script writer for the awesome lines. Lastly the film was based on a book by Margaret Mitchell by the same name. Truly the film has great individuals who worked in and on this film.

  2. In part 1 of this long movie, starts with Scarlett O’Hara finding out her love, Ashley Wilkes, is engaged to a woman by the name Melanie Hamilton who is Ashley’s cousin. It may seem a little different of a family member marrying another family member but back in the time of the Civil War it was pretty common and legal throughout states. Scarlett of course was crushed and didn’t like it at all. The O’Hara’s were invited to a barbecue at Ashley’s home, at the nearby plantation, Twelve Oaks. Once at the barbecue, Scarlett meets a man who has admired her throughout the whole party named Rhett Butler. Rhett is there as all of the other men for a discussion of if they should start a war, now known as the Civil War. Once the choice has been made, all of the men go racing out to enroll in the war. Seeing Ashley kissing Melanie, Scarlett accepts a proposal by Charles Hamilton, Melanie’s younger brother. Although Scarlett doesn’t love Charles, she marries him before he leaves to fight. During the war, Scarlett is sent to the Hamilton home in Atlanta, Georgia to cheer her up. When Ashley returns from the war during Christmas, he asks Scarlett to take care of Melanie for him because she is now with child. Scarlett accepts because of her love for him and Ashley is off to war once again. Eight months later, Atlanta is being attacked by the Union Army in the Atlanta Campaign and Melanie goes into premature and difficult labor. Scarlett, keeping her promise, helps with her servant, Prissy, to deliver the baby. Rhett comes to the help and takes Scarlett, Prissy, Melanie, and her baby away from the burning city. When Rhett leaves to fight in the war, Scarlett is left to take care of the other three with a half dead horse taking them back to her home, Tara. Part 1 is probably one of sad endings and events of Gone With The Wind.

In Part 2, Scarlett has made it to Tara but her home is in ruin with her mother just recently died and her father’s mind slowly slipping away. Now Scarlett must work the whole day in the cotton fields with her family and servants. Unable to pay taxes for Tara, Scarlett using her manipulating skills to make her sister’s fiancĂ©, Frank Kennedy, marry her instead. With the war over, Ashley, Rhett, and every other soldier return from the war with them losing. Ashley returns to Tara while Rhett gets put into a small jail close to Tara. One night Scarlett is attacked and Ashley, Rhett, Frank, and a few other men raid a town where the men who attacked her and resulted in Frank’s death. With Frank’s funeral barely over, Rhett visits Scarlett and proposes to her and she accepts. Both, Scarlett and Rhett, have a daughter whom they name Bonnie Blue. When Scarlett calls upon Ashely, they are caught in an embrace by Ashley’s sister, India, who spreads rumors of their encounter. Once Scarlett becomes pregnant again, she falls down a flight of stairs. Afterwards, while Scarlett is recovering, Bonnie gets into a terrible accident when riding her pony. Melanie visits the weeping parents but then collapses because of complications arising from her new pregnancy. When visiting Melanie’s deathbed after she has given birth, Melanie asks Scarlett to take care of Ashley for her. Scarlett accepts and when she goes out of the room, she consoles Ashley. This action resulting in Rhett quickly returning home without Scarlett. Realizing that Ashley only truly loved Melanie, Scarlett races home to find Rhett preparing to leave her for good. She pleads with him to stay but he refuses and leaves. When Scarlett is all alone, she vows to win back his love one day and returns to her true home, Tara.

  3. The film was based on the magnificent tale by Margaret Mitchell by the same name. The book did just as good as the movie. The movie came out in theaters on January 1, 1939 with huge success. The film made $390 million in the box office. However, the total length of the movie is about 238 minutes with the overture, intermission, entr’acte, and exit music. Gone With The Wind won 8 awards which included best actress, best director, and best picture. This beautiful love story should be watched by everyone.

In my opinion, Gone With The Wind has definitely deserved all of the awards won. It has showed me history and a new perspective of how life truly went on in the years of the Civil War and the Reconstruction Era. The film is truly great and I recommend anyone who hasn’t seen it should. It is worth the 4 hours to just sit and watch such a spectacular piece of art. Also with the amazing quote by Sidney Howard and spoken by Clark Gable as Rhett Butler, “Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.”
